With its «Way of Working», Sunrise is positioning itself as the most modern employer in Switzerland. In addition to innovative models for mobility and flexible working, another key element is the introduction of the «Ultimate Digital Workplace». Since the end of 2020, all Sunrise employees receive a 5G business smartphone, and this summer they started receiving the latest HP laptops featuring 5G technology.
The environment, social responsibility and technology are key issues for Sunrise and are integral to its sustainability strategy. To make a substantial contribution to the recycling economy and the fight against electrical waste, Sunrise has handed over the first 200 older-generation laptops to the Aargau-based association «Wir lernen weiter» (wLw), which collects used devices, refurbishes them and distributes them to people who need them throughout Switzerland.
«At a time when issues of social and environmental responsibility are very much at the forefront, Sunrise is taking on a leading role in this area. With our products and services we connect people in Switzerland and it’s our duty to help reduce the digital and social divide in our country,» explains André Krause, CEO of Sunrise.
The mission – to collect used laptops, refurbish them and give them away free
The donated devices will be professionally refurbished by «Wir lernen weiter» and passed on to people living in poverty throughout Switzerland. Since its launch in April 2020, the Aargau-based charity has already been able to save more than 6,000 laptops from becoming electrical waste and thereby help people who have no other way of obtaining such devices.
«Even in a country as wealthy as Switzerland, poverty still exists. Today, for example, around 8.5% of the population has to live on less than CHF 2,279 per month. These people simply don’t have the spare money to buy the basic equipment they need. Access to digitization must not become a privilege dependent on a person’s income, but must instead be a fundamental right for everyone in Switzerland,» adds Tobias Schär, founder and CEO of wLw.
The laptops donated by Sunrise will enable people in genuine need to engage in essential everyday digital activities, such as participating in education, making job applications and general digital communication. As part of the rollout of the new 5G devices, even more laptops will be donated to wLw.
